📖 Our Story & The Event

The Loring Timing Association (LTA) was built by racers for racers, creating a land speed racing home at the historic Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine. What started in 2009 has grown into one of the fastest, most accessible, and friendliest speed events in the country.

Why Loring?
It’s the longest asphalt runway in the U.S. — up to 2.7 miles long — providing a wide-open, well-maintained surface perfect for high-speed passes. The community atmosphere is second to none: you’ll find rookies making their first runs and veterans chasing new records side by side in the pits. It’s a true grassroots racing family.

The Maine Event is LTA’s premier meet, drawing racers from all over North America to experience high speeds, good times, and even better stories.

Race Rules

If you’re ready to run, here’s how it works — a mix of common sense, safety-first protocol, and a healthy respect for your fellow racers and the track.

📝 Pre-Race Prep:

  • Download & Read the Rule Book: Know what’s required for your vehicle class, safety equipment, and racing procedures.

  • Build (or Borrow) Your Ride: Make sure your machine meets the mechanical and safety guidelines.

  • Pre-Register: Save money and help us plan for volunteers, potties, and food vendors.

🚗 Race Weekend Basics:

  1. Arrive & Settle Into the Pits: 10 MPH speed limit everywhere in the pits — no exceptions.

  2. Check-In & Tech Inspection: Bring your paperwork, vehicle, and safety gear. Cars running over 175 MPH need 2 tech inspectors; over 200 MPH requires 3. (Motorcycles: 150 MPH = 2 inspectors; 175+ MPH = 3.)

  3. Rookie Orientation: Mandatory for all new drivers/riders before first runs. Incremental speed passes are required, increasing in 25 MPH increments, signed off by the starter.

  4. Safety First: Every pit area needs a visible fire extinguisher. No reckless conduct on the course, in pits, or on the return road.

  5. Race! Timed runs are typically at the 1.0 and 1.5-mile marks on the 2.7-mile course (weather permitting).

  6. Celebrate & Pack Out: Respect the facility, clean your pit area, and grab your records, stickers, and speed club hats!

📖 Competition & Safety Requirements (Highlights):

  • Driver Licensing: Valid driver’s license required. Minimum age is 18. New drivers advance license categories with each event and progressively faster passes.

  • Vehicle Classes: It’s your team’s job to register in the correct class. Changes can be made at registration for a $50 fee.

  • Logbook & Records: An official LTA logbook is required for all tech inspections. Records are certified electronically.

  • Engine Protests: There’s a formal process for displacement protests, including a $500 protest fee.

  • Safety Gear: Always permitted to exceed minimum safety requirements — and encouraged!

  • Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Not tolerated. Any unsafe, reckless, or disrespectful actions can result in removal from the event.

If it’s safe, you’ve passed tech, and you’re ready to have a blast — we want you on our track.

At Loring, we believe if you’ve got a car, you’ve got a chance to go fast. Whether you’re bringing a daily driver, a built supercar, or a dedicated land speed machine — there’s a place for you on our runway. We’ve designed classes and safety requirements that let you safely chase speed at your own level.
Here’s what you need to know before you head for tech inspection:

🔧 Car Basics

 

Speed costs money… how fast do you want to go?
Here’s a quick glance at how safety gear requirements stack up as your speeds climb. (And yes — convertibles run one level higher on the safety chart.)

Important:
👉 This chart is just a guideline — racers are required to read the full LTA Rule Book for exact class specs and safety equipment rules before arriving at tech inspection.

🚙 135 Class (Street Car)

Always wanted to run your street car flat out in a safe, controlled environment?

This one’s for you.

Key Details:

  • Speed limit: Strict 135 MPH cap.

  • No records: Runs in this class do not qualify for records.

  • Runs: Limited to 5 runs per event day. (More if traffic is light late in the day.)

  • Driver requirements: Valid driver’s license, approved helmet, non-synthetic clothing covering to the wrists and ankles, and solid footwear (no cowboy boots).

  • Tires: Must be speed-rated for 135 MPH.

  • Convertibles: Must have a roll bar. No exceptions.

  • Want to go over 135? You’ll need a roll cage and will move up to a race car class.

Perfect for: First-timers, folks looking to scratch that top-speed itch, and car club friends out for a safe weekend of fun.

🏎️ Supercar Class (195 MPH Max)

Have a high-horsepower exotic you’ve always wanted to stretch its legs on a real land speed course? The LTA Supercar Class was made just for you — with strict safety standards to match your performance. Whether it’s a Corvette Z06, Porsche Turbo S, Nissan GT-R, or something Italian with a prancing horse, this is your shot at a mile-long, flat-out run.

 

📏 Class Overview:

  • Speed Limit: Absolutely no faster than 195 MPH. Exceeding this limit can result in immediate dismissal from the event.

  • Course: Supercars run on the 1-mile course only — no exceptions.

  • Driver Orientation: All drivers must attend rookie orientation and the driver’s meeting prior to making any runs.

  • Incremental Licensing Runs:

    • First pass at 125 MPH

    • Second pass at 150 MPH

    • Third pass at 175 MPH
      Successful runs are required before reaching your top speed attempts.

🚫 Convertible Policy:

Convertibles — even factory supercars — are not permitted in this class.

🛠️ Vehicle & Safety Equipment Requirements:

Eligible Vehicles:
Modern production supercars such as Corvette, Cadillac CTS-V, Porsche, Nissan GT-R, McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.


⚠️ Heavily modified vehicles (powertrain, aerodynamics, etc.) must be pre-approved by Race Director Joe Daly and may be required to run under full Land Speed Racing rules.

Mandatory Safety Gear:

  • Fire Extinguisher:

    • 2 lb. automotive BC type

    • Securely mounted with a quick-release metallic bracket (no zip ties/hose clamps).

  • Helmet:

    • Full-face helmet certified SNELL M or SA 2010-2020, or ECE 22-05.

  • Eye Protection:

    • Shatterproof glasses required if helmet lacks a face shield.

  • Seats & Belts:

    • OEM seats or aftermarket metallic race seats

    • Factory 3-point belts in excellent condition or properly mounted racing harnesses.

  • Clothing:

    • Non-synthetic, full-body coverage (cotton, wool, or leather)

    • Leather tennis shoes (no cowboy boots)

    • Leather gloves mandatory

    • SFI-rated driving suit and fire-resistant accessories are highly recommended, but not required.

  • Tires:

    • DOT-approved tires meeting or exceeding OEM load/speed ratings

    • Drag radials approved up to 175 MPH

    • No front “skinnies” allowed.

  • Vehicle Condition:

    • No fluid leaks

    • Tires, brakes, wheels inspected for condition

    • All loose items, floor mats, and console contents removed.

 

📣 Final Reminders:

  • The LTA takes safety seriously. Vehicles that don’t meet these standards won’t run, and refunds won’t be issued for missed requirements.

  • Tech Inspector decisions can be appealed to the Chief Technical Inspector or Race Director — whose ruling is final.

  • Most importantly: insurance carriers do not cover racing incidents. Please check with your agent beforehand.

🏍️ Race Your Motorcycle at LTA

At the Loring Timing Association, we believe land speed racing isn’t just for four wheels. Two-wheel daredevils are a huge part of our racing family — from vintage café racers and turbo Hayabusas to electric bikes and homebuilt specials. If it’s got handlebars, a throttle, and a whole lot of heart, we’ve got a place for it here.

Whether you’re chasing that elusive 200 MPH hat or just want to see what your daily rider can do with a little extra room, our wide-open Maine runway is the perfect stage for your machine.

🛠️ Motorcycle Class Basics

If it’s your first time, start here:

  • Speed costs money — how fast do you want to go?
    Your bike’s safety setup depends on how quick you intend to be. LTA separates motorcycles by type and speed for safety inspections.

  • Tech Inspection is a must.
    Every motorcycle must pass a technical and safety inspection before getting on course.

    • Bikes running over 150 MPH need to be inspected by two inspectors.

    • Over 175 MPH requires three inspectors.

  • No passes without proper gear.
    You’ll need a good helmet, appropriate leathers, gloves, boots, and any additional gear based on your bike’s speed class.

🏍️ Speed Licensing &

Incremental Runs

First-timers and seasoned riders alike follow a progressive licensing system for safety:

  • First pass at 125 MPH

  • Next at 150 MPH

  • Then at 175 MPH

  • After that — if you and your bike are good to go — you’ll be cleared for your top speed runs.

New riders must attend a Rookie Orientation session before their first run. Miss it, and you’ll have to arrange a one-on-one with a race official.

🏁 What You’ll Need to Race

Safety Equipment:

  • Helmet: SNELL M or SA 2010+ or ECE 22-05 certified.

  • Eye Protection: If your helmet doesn’t have a face shield, shatterproof glasses are required.

  • Leathers:

    • 1-piece or zip-together 2-piece leather suit

    • Textile suits are generally not permitted for higher speeds — check the Rule Book for your class.

  • Gloves: Full leather, covering past the wrist.

  • Boots: Over-the-ankle leather boots (no sneakers, no exceptions).

Bike Requirements:

  • All bikes must have a clean, leak-free presentation.

  • Tires in excellent condition, properly speed-rated for your anticipated top speed.

  • Functioning brakes, steering, and all critical components.

  • Numbers and class markings clearly displayed.

  • Special attention to chain guards, fairing attachments, and safety wiring for high-speed classes.

Over 175 MPH?
You’ll likely need additional items like a tether kill switch and upgraded protective gear — consult the current LTA Rule Book for complete details.

📣 Important Reminders:

  • No two-up riding or passengers.

  • No foot-pushing allowed in the pits or to staging — bring a friend or a pit bike.

  • ATV’s and side-by-sides must follow pit safety rules (helmets, seatbelts, and speed limits apply).

  • Maintain a 10 MPH limit in the pits and 35 MPH on the return road.

⚡ Electric Vehicles at LTA

The future of speed is silent — and at Loring, we fully embrace it. From homebuilt conversions to cutting-edge hypercars, electric vehicles have made their mark on the LTA course, and we’re always excited to see what shows up next.

If you’ve got a vehicle powered by electrons instead of octane, you’ll find a welcoming spot on our runway. But just like their gas-powered cousins, EVs have their own set of safety requirements and procedures to follow.

⚙️ EV Class Basics

  • All electric vehicles fall under their own classification within the LTA rulebook, whether it’s a car, motorcycle, or custom-built streamliner.

  • Vehicles are grouped by body type and voltage.

    • Voltage over 288V typically moves you into higher safety scrutiny.

  • Racers must follow incremental speed licensing procedures just like ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles — building up in 25 MPH steps.

🔋 EV Tech & Safety Requirements

Battery System:

  • Must be properly secured and enclosed.

  • No exposed high-voltage cabling in passenger or driver areas.

  • All high-voltage cables must be orange or labeled.

Main Power Shut-Off:

  • A clearly labeled, external master kill switch is required and must be easily accessible to race officials.

Fire Extinguisher:

  • Minimum of 2.5 lb. ABC-rated extinguisher securely mounted within reach of the driver/rider.

  • EV-specific extinguishers are highly recommended for higher-voltage builds.

Protective Clothing:

  • Same requirements as equivalent speed gas-powered vehicles:

    • SNELL M or SA 2010+ helmet

    • 1-piece or zip-together leather suit for motorcycles

    • SFI-rated suit for cars, dependent on speed class

    • Gloves, boots, and additional SFI accessories for high-speed classes
