📍 About the Area: Welcome to Limestone, Maine
Tucked away in Aroostook County — affectionately known as The County by locals — Limestone is a small town with a big story. With a population of just over 2,300 people, it may be quiet most of the year, but it comes alive when racers, volunteers, and spectators gather at the historic Loring Commerce Centre (formerly Loring Air Force Base).
🌲 A Little History
Limestone was officially incorporated in 1869, and like many towns in Northern Maine, its roots are deep in farming and logging. In 1953, Limestone made its mark on the map when Loring Air Force Base opened as one of the largest Strategic Air Command bases in the country. At its peak, Loring was home to thousands of Air Force personnel and families, complete with schools, shops, and a bustling community. The base officially closed in 1994, but its runways and infrastructure now serve as the heart of our racing events — and it’s one of the longest airstrips in the country.
Fun fact: when Loring AFB was active, its runway was so long it could land a space shuttle in an emergency!
🌄 The Town Today
These days, Limestone remains a small, welcoming town surrounded by rolling fields, potato farms, and some of the most stunning sunsets you'll ever see. While the town itself doesn’t have lodging options, neighboring Caribou (15 minutes away) and Presque Isle (25 minutes away) offer a variety of hotels, restaurants, and amenities to make your stay comfortable.
